March 2006

I can’t hold it back anymore. Gotta let it go. There is an issue at hand that I feel I need to address to the masses. So if you have a weak stomach or are easily offended please stop reading here (it gets pretty bad). Many of you all reading this post, would like to establish (or in some cases, maintain) healthy hair. I have two questions for you how are you going to do it? When are you going to do it?

Here’s one more for you. Ever since beauty stores have appeared in your neighborhood, via major chains and “mom” and “pop” stores has you hair gotten better? Or worse? (Hummmm?)    Depending upon the way you answered the question, I can tell a little bit about how much value you place on the health (and appearance) of your hair.

If you’re thinking that your hair’s state has worsened chances are, you have been persuaded into believing that you can purchase (inferior) products, be totally clueless on how, or when to use them, and you will be able to produce the same results that your professional stylist does, out of the salon. They Got You! What is even crazier, is, regardless of the fact that you seem to be loosing more and more hair (not including the breakage and split ends and/or dried up color you have) you still continue to perform the same ritual, looking for different results.

Now here we are today, and if the health of your hair means anything to you, I suggest that you do something about it, something different that is! When people want the best results, they “hire” professionals, right? You may want to keep that in mind.

Some of you don’t mind if your hair looks like your babysitter’s or your ex-neighbor’s hair (who by the way uses box perms to relax her hair and never gets her ends trimmed). You know the one with that “long, see through” hair, the one that refuses to get it trimmed, because she wants it to grow! (Huh?) It’s sad to say but people still judge you (at least initially) by the way you speak and the way you carry yourself. If I have offended anyone, I apologize, but like mama use to tell me, “If you throw a rock at a pack of dogs, it’s the hit dog that hollers loudest”.

The point I’m trying to make is, if establishing healthy hair is one of your goals for the year, then you must try something different (if your old results weren’t producing the results you were looking for). Good luck to you in all your future endeavors, until then grow it…don’t sew it, bless it, don’t stress it and try not to cut any corners when it comes to establishing/maintaining ANYTHING that is IMPORTANT to you.

The Bronner Bros. Hairshow Is it just me or does it seem like the Bronner Bros. Hairshow should be called The Bronner Bros. Hair Flea Market? I love this industry to death, but truth be told, every time I go I get more and more disappointed! When I was new to this industry and hungry to get the knowledge (I still am hungry for the knowledge, but I just don’t consider myself a newbie anymore) I gathered up all the money I could, rode to Atlanta, stayed at my favorite hotel, ate at my favorite restaurants (Cheesecake Factory and Houston’s - MUCH LOVE) and immersed myself with as much education as my budget could stand and I was actually glad I went.  *Sigh* Those days are gone! Don’t get it twisted, I LOVE Atlanta and I LOVE this profession that chose me! Which makes it even harder to put my finger on it. Maybe it’s the “up-in-your-face” sales tactics that the hairshow booth renters use to push products on anyone bold enough to walk past them or their table!

*Scratching Head*  Maybe its the way the companies use stylist to endorse their specific products and swear that these products will increase every stylist’s yearly income, have your clients bringing in clients by the truckload, and change the world! Oh well. I can’t put my finger on it but here is what I do know…I love being a professional stylist, I love Atlanta, I love being entertained and more than likely, I’ll be there in August
